Business Capabilities as Product. A mechanism for Operational and Analytical information concerns

Operational processes and analytical processes are typically two separate worlds. This leads to inherent challenges when handing over data from the operational plane into the analytical plane. Typically data is dumped into the analytical plane, and teams scramble to do business analysis to understand the provided data, and turn it into information useful for analysis and reporting use cases.

This presentation proposes business capabilities as a means of establishing functional domains, where people operate and improve business processes, aided with automation to delivery effective and efficient operations. Additionally the team owning and responsible for its strategic development is also owning the distinct master-data related to the corresponding business capability.

Business Capabilities are proposed as a productized mechanism to manage data integrations as a product, which is owned by a team, which delivers owned, governed and ideally interoperable and standardized interfaces for operational as well as analytical consumption, derived from a federated logical data model.

This way the operational and analytics planes are aligned in a more cohesive manner, reducing the distance between operational business and analytics use cases. This should increase the change pace, the quality of data and hence the operational and analytical cohesion, attributing to value of the information produced.
